About Estelle

Estelle Chessid is a lifelong lover of books. For many years she was a dealer in Antiquarian books, and when she retired, she became a full-time artist. She incorporates reproductions of the color plates and illustrations she collected into her artwork.

Each work recounts a multitude of strange, compelling stories, imagining relationships between characters from historical prints and works of art.

For Estelle, old books and illustrations open a portal into dimensions of fantasy where flat forms and figures rise up through intricate layers to become vibrant three-dimensional narrative structures, inviting interaction and conversation with centuries past.

She describes her creations as “magical worlds in which old characters can interact and converse in new ways,” and she conjures them by bending and blending the idiosyncratic vision of various iconic artists into original, cohesive and timeless narratives.
